Wildmatt was joined by guest hosts Adem Stiner and Mac19pm as they discussed the news such as 3DS XL, Smash Bros, Seth Killian’s exit, Starcraft on Wii U & more. We also had a top 10 about the games that have aged gracefully.
TGS is officially starting tomorrow, but Nintendo and Sony both had press conferences and we’ll discuss them here.
Nintendo basically confirmed and showed off the new 3DS expansion disc thing, whatever they call it. It’s just a 2nd analog stick attachment for the 3DS we’ve discussed previously on the site. The rumors of them revealing a new 3DS with that 2nd analog stick didn’t come through, but I’m still expecting them to do that, but when, that still remains the question. They decided to focus on software instead which was definitely the better choice, lots of people are still pissed about the price-drop. They showed off Paper Mario, Mario Tennis, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land amongst others.
The Sony conference focuses on the PSVita, they revealed some specs, some new games, and new trailers. They announced the Japanese date of release as December 17th. A bunch of HD re-releases are also coming to the Vita such as Konami’s Metal Gear Solid HD and Zone of the Enders HD, Sony revealed Final Fantasy X is coming to both the handheld and the PS3. Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Katamari Damacy, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, Lord of the Apocalypse and Armies of Hell are all coming to the Vita. As for the specs, it’ll boast a ton of RAM and a 4-core A9 CPU, the battery life is expected to be 3 to 5 hours of gameplay and takes 2 hours to charge. That’s about even with the 3DS, although the 3DS takes about 3.5 hours to charge fully. You can check out the full specs at Destructoid.
The first footage of Dead or Alive 5 got released today, it looks pretty alright, that’s definitely DOA.
Tecmo had another trailer in the form of Ninja Gaiden 3. Looks like the storyline for the title is going completely off the rails! I really loved the first game, the 2nd was also great, so I’m looking foward to this.
Street Fighter X Tekken has a TGS trailer out that showcases some new features such as “Pandora”. The feature allows you to sacrifice your tag partner for a “short, but powerful, boost in strength” and a weird character color change. They also revealed a 4 player scramble mode, which let’s everyone duke it out all at once or you can also choose to play the standard tag game 4 players. Lastly, the trailer shows off a new training mode called briefing that allows you to take it online, a nice way to train that should of been added to SF4 a long time ago.
Rockstar decided to release a Max Payne 3 trailer, why’d they wait this long, I’m not sure. In any case, it looks nice, the original voice actor does reprise his role and it’s running off a modified RAGE engine. Now I know it’s been awhile but that isn’t the id Tech 5 engine, that’s Rockstar’s engine used in GTAIV. I’m definitely interested to see how this turns out, without Remedy behind the scenes working on it.
I got to play Minecraft 1.8 for a bit, which is officially out now. The new lighting looks great, it’s the first thing you’ll notice. The 2nd thing I noticed were the new alien type things that disappear and appear out of no where. I’m not totally sure how I feel about this new update, but I’m sure it’ll grow on me with time.

Indy game Fez just got a new screenshot today, and interestingly enough, it’s a video. This game plays in 2D side-scrolling style but you can rotate the world. It looks like fun; can’t wait to see this on XBLA.
So… We called this on the last FAIOR. This is the “3DS Expansion Slide Pad”, it adds a 2nd analog pad to the system and apparently adds 2 more shoulder buttons. It looks ugly and it also blocks the game slot, meaning you’ll have to take it off to switch games. Oh well, I’m assuming this means the pre-TGS announcement Nintendo is scheduled to make is a new hardware revision for the 3DS.
Dead Island was recently released on Steam, however it wasn’t the finished product. People who bought it on the service received an older version, but the publisher Deep Silver has apologized and let us know that an update is incoming ASAP.
The system requirements for Rage has been released by Bethesda. The game is a little less than a month away, and I’m really looking forward to it. You can go check them out here, the specs aren’t that bad to be honest.
There’s a Persona 4 fighting game coming! Yes. You read that correctly. It’s being developed by Arc System Works, the same team behind Guilty Gear and Blazblue and it’s looking very pretty. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays and how it’s received by the public, you can check out some screen-shots here.
A bunch of PS Vita game announcements got leaked from the upcoming Famitsu Japanese magazine. They are:
• Lumines: Electronic Symphony
• Rayman Origins
• Michael Jackson The Experience HD
• Dark Quest
• Dream Club Zero Portable
• Moe Moe Daisensou
• Ragnarok Odyssey
Interesting to see Rayman Origins and Ragnarok Odyssey on there. We already know what the Rayman game is, I’m just wondering if the Ragnarok game will be something entirely new.
G4 reports that all three Devil May Cry games have been rated by the ESRB for release on both the PS3 and Xbox 360.
A Japanese poster for Battlefield 3 might’ve revealed that the 360 version of the game will come packaged on 2 DVDs. Chalk up another reason to get the PS3 version, unless you have a beefy PC of course.
The latest entry in the Driver series has an “online pass” attached to it. Ubisoft fudged it up big time while the codes for these passes are non-functional, making it so no one could play online for a while. The game is now free-to-play, so go buy the game used! “Due to a printing error on the insert of some copies of Driver: San Francisco in North America, Ubisoft has elected to provide the Driver Uplay Passport content for free,” Ubisoft said in a statement sent to gaming news site CVG. “Although this problem does not affect players outside of North America, we have decided to mirror this offer to everyone in the world in order to be fair to all our players.”
The 3DS has already gone to $169.99 at some retailers, but with 2 more days left until the drop officially happens, Wal-Mart has already lowered the price. So you might want to hop on that if you want the 20 free GBA and NES games, for less. This isn’t the only 3DS news today, it now comes in red! Wow!
The newest PS3 firmware (v3.70) adds automatic trophy updating and auto-cloud saving. Although, these features are for PSN+ users only, shitty deal.
The newest add-on for Fallout: New Vegas that was scheduled for the end of the month has been delayed. The Lonesome Road DLC has been postponed, no reason has been given but Bethesda says they’re working on getting it out ASAP.
Coder yifanlu is working on reverse-engineering the PlayStation Phone to play custom ISOs. The great thing about this is he isn’t using a custom emulator, he’s using the phone’s native emulator that runs their commercially available games. Great news for owners of the machine, not so great news for Sony.
Milla Jovovich will be starring in the next Resident Evil movie entitled Retribution. It will be out in September 2012.
Rock Band 3 has a new publisher in MadCatz. The now defunct MTV Games, formerly published the Harmonix title, but they’ve now found a new partner. Not that surprising considering MadCatz has shown interest in publishing, and that they also manufacture the game’s official peripherals.
Assassin’s Creed: Revelation has a PS3-exclusive beta coming in September. PlayStation Plus or non-paying Ubisoft Uplay members will be able to test the beta starting on September 3, with the beta opening up to everyone on September 12th. The game ships on November 15th for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
Ellen McLain, the voice of GLaDOS is currently at Valve recording for her famous Portal role. I guess this means more Portal-something is on the way, whether that’s DLC or a new game, remains to be seen.
Euclideon CEO, Bruce Dell has commented on the claims that their infinite detail engine is fake. He pretty much had to say that the engine is a work-in-progress and it isn’t a hoax. You can read about it at Kotaku Australia.
Borderlands 2 got officially revealed today via next month’s Game Informer cover. The sequel is scheduled to be released between April 2012 and spring 2013.
The 3DS is having even more problems, Nintendo has suggested that owners of their portable, place a peice of cloth between the 2 screens, when it’s closed. Why? Well turns out the 2 screens touch each other (news to me), and causes scratches on the top screen. Not content with that option, some users have pulled the rubber feet off their 360, and placed them on the top corners of the system… Curing the dumb hardware flaw.
Activision has confirmed today that the Wii will indeed be getting a version of Modern Warfare 3. It’ll be released before the end of the year. They’ve also announced the new DLC for Black Ops entitled Rezurrection. If you’re planning to attend Call of Duty Con, you will receive a voucher for a free copy of Modern Warfare 3: Hardened Edition. No details on what this edition will include, knowing that, the $140 price tag for the Con doesn’t seem that bad now.
Today’s top story comes all the way from Australia. Brisbane tech company Euclideon posted this video today on Youtube, causing an uproar on the web spawning many different opinions. Minecraft Creator “Notch” posted this on his blog: “it’s a very pretty and very impressive piece of technology, but they’re carefully avoiding to mention any of the drawbacks, and they’re pretending like what they’re doing is something new and impressive. In reality, it’s been done several times before.” Then he points people to alternatives that he thinks could work, like this one. John Carmack, the king of nerds over at id tweeted this “no chance of a game on current gen systems, but maybe several years from now. Production issues will be challenging.” My thoughts on this are pretty much in line with Mr. Carmack’s, there’s no reason to believe it’s not possible. If you remember when OnLive launched, everyone was skeptical, however it works. At the same time though, they never go into details about how it works and why.
Square Enix has announced the price of the long awaited iOS port, Final Fantasy Tactics. That’s great news, although the price itself isn’t so great, it’ll set you back $16. In a world where you can buy similar titles for a dollar or two, it’ll be interesting to see how Final Fantasy Tactics sells. That being said, I don’t doubt the force of thousands of fanboys who will bite the wallet with this one.
Sony Computer Entertainment has acquired Sucker Punch, the studio responsible for titles such as Infamous and Sly Cooper. Fantastic news for Sony, surprised it hasn’t happened sooner.
Gears of War 3 was leaked onto the internet a while ago, and now there are videos popping up on Youtube, forum posts about the story, and more spoiling the entire game. Sad news, but Mark Reins, Gears executive producer is wondering the same thing I am, why would you spoil yourself? I guess if you’re not interested in the game, you wouldn’t care.
Satoru Iwata has an interesting letter addressing the people who feel “betrayed” about the 3DS price drop. It’s not anything surprising but at the same time, it’s not the typical spin companies try to put on price drops. You can go read the Kotaku article here.
Limbo was released on Steam today for $9.99, I’ve never personally played the game, however I doubt that all those great reviews I’ve read are wrong.
According to Eurogamer the sequel to Borderlands is in development and that an announcement from publisher 2K Games is coming soon.
