TGS is officially starting tomorrow, but Nintendo and Sony both had press conferences and we’ll discuss them here.
Nintendo basically confirmed and showed off the new 3DS expansion disc thing, whatever they call it. It’s just a 2nd analog stick attachment for the 3DS we’ve discussed previously on the site. The rumors of them revealing a new 3DS with that 2nd analog stick didn’t come through, but I’m still expecting them to do that, but when, that still remains the question. They decided to focus on software instead which was definitely the better choice, lots of people are still pissed about the price-drop. They showed off Paper Mario, Mario Tennis, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land amongst others.
The Sony conference focuses on the PSVita, they revealed some specs, some new games, and new trailers. They announced the Japanese date of release as December 17th. A bunch of HD re-releases are also coming to the Vita such as Konami’s Metal Gear Solid HD and Zone of the Enders HD, Sony revealed Final Fantasy X is coming to both the handheld and the PS3. Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Katamari Damacy, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, Lord of the Apocalypse and Armies of Hell are all coming to the Vita. As for the specs, it’ll boast a ton of RAM and a 4-core A9 CPU, the battery life is expected to be 3 to 5 hours of gameplay and takes 2 hours to charge. That’s about even with the 3DS, although the 3DS takes about 3.5 hours to charge fully. You can check out the full specs at Destructoid.
The first footage of Dead or Alive 5 got released today, it looks pretty alright, that’s definitely DOA.
Tecmo had another trailer in the form of Ninja Gaiden 3. Looks like the storyline for the title is going completely off the rails! I really loved the first game, the 2nd was also great, so I’m looking foward to this.
Street Fighter X Tekken has a TGS trailer out that showcases some new features such as “Pandora”. The feature allows you to sacrifice your tag partner for a “short, but powerful, boost in strength” and a weird character color change. They also revealed a 4 player scramble mode, which let’s everyone duke it out all at once or you can also choose to play the standard tag game 4 players. Lastly, the trailer shows off a new training mode called briefing that allows you to take it online, a nice way to train that should of been added to SF4 a long time ago.
Rockstar decided to release a Max Payne 3 trailer, why’d they wait this long, I’m not sure. In any case, it looks nice, the original voice actor does reprise his role and it’s running off a modified RAGE engine. Now I know it’s been awhile but that isn’t the id Tech 5 engine, that’s Rockstar’s engine used in GTAIV. I’m definitely interested to see how this turns out, without Remedy behind the scenes working on it.
I got to play Minecraft 1.8 for a bit, which is officially out now. The new lighting looks great, it’s the first thing you’ll notice. The 2nd thing I noticed were the new alien type things that disappear and appear out of no where. I’m not totally sure how I feel about this new update, but I’m sure it’ll grow on me with time.
Check out this footage of the God of War: Origins Collection. If you didn’t already know it brings over the 2 PSP games over to a PS3 Blu-ray disc. It looks pretty fantastic, you can check out more details over at the PlayStation blog.
Developer Tetsuya Mizuguchi hit YouTube today, to let everyone know that his game Child of Eden will release on the PS3, September 27th. It’ll support the Move controller and also have 3DTV support.
Gotham City Imposters just released a new trailer showcasing the comical character customization. The concept of the game still confuses me a bit, but it’s looking fairly good.
The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive rumors were both started and confirmed overnight it seems. Valve said that “CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.” The game is slated to hit shelves in early 2012, and will be available for PC, 360 and PS3. “Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999,” Valve spokesman Doug Lombardi said in today’s announcement. “For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS‘ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.”
Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson is getting hitched today. In celebration, everyone who buys the game over the weekend will receive another copy to gift to a buddy or significant other. You can go buy a copy for $15 over at their site.
If you want to play the full Rage experience, you’re going to have to buy it new! Yes, that’s right, id is (sorta) hopping on the “online pass” bandwagon. They’ve gone a different way with it though, there will be a sewer system in the game available to only those who purchase it new. No idea how it will work really…
Twisted Metal got delayed today to 2012, it was originally scheduled for October 4th, 2011. David Jaffe, the game’s creator had this to say on the PlayStation blog: “If we shipped Twisted Metal tomorrow-–going off the response from folks who have played it—I assure you, it would never be a bad game. Not even close. But we’re aiming for a heck of a lot more than that! With Twisted Metal we plan to ship a multiplayer classic. We plan to ship the best Twisted Metal ever made. We plan to convert a lot of folks who think vehicle combat is a relic best left to 90’s nostalgia. And we plan to explode the belief that the only relevant kind of shooter is a first person one (or a 3rd person one, where you play a human… with a tee shirt not all the way tucked in …). Most importantly, we plan on treating you – the kind folks who play our game (and pay our bills) – like the VIPs that you are. You only deserve our best and we appreciate your understanding as we take a little more time to guarantee that our best is what we deliver”.
You can get the Bastion soundtrack right now on Super Giant Games’ site. It’s available to stream, or download for $10, you can also get it on a compact disc for $15. In more Bastion news, the PC version got a release date of August 16th on Steam for $15. If you’re not a fan of Steam, looks like you’ll have to wait an unspecified amount of time.
Minecraft is still in beta but it has managed to sell 3 million copies. That’s quite the feat for any game, but for a game that’s not even officially out yet, that’s very impressive.
We’ve discussed this on Fresh Air is Over-Rated before, but for some reason it seems to be reappearing on other blogs. So let’s reiterate, EA has released a list of digital retailers that Battlefield 3 will be available on, and that list did not contain Steam. There’s no word if it’ll ever come to Steam, so don’t count on it yet.
Sony revealed PSN PLAY today, it’s very much like the Summer of Arcade on the 360. There are 4 games you can buy for $15 each, (Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, The Baconing, BloodRayne: Betrayal and Renegade Ops) they go on sale starting August 23rd. If you purchase all of them (and you’re above 18 years of age) you’ll receive Payday: The Heist a $20 value, for free. On top of all this, if you’re a PSN+ subscriber you’ll get 20% off everything. The value just keeps coming, if you buy all of these games. You get DLC for free, and if you pre-order it all, you get XMB themes.
Nolan North, the voice of Drake in Uncharted and everyone else in every other game, will voice the Penguin in Arkham City. Crazy right?
For some reason Bethesda is suing Notch over his next game entitled Scrolls. The title is a card-battling game, so I’m as baffled as the next person as to why they’d do this. Notch has said that this is simply lawyers-being-lawyers and is still looking forward to playing Prey 2.
